A Talk by Prof. Jessica Retis (Professor, School of Journalism, University of Arizona)

Transpacific Diasporas in Transition: Media, Migration, and the Reconfiguration of Nikkei Identities

This lecture explored how media practices shaped identity and community formation among Japanese diaspora communities connecting Japan and South America (Brazil and Peru). Drawing on long-term fieldwork conducted across three cities — São Paulo, Lima, and Tokyo — between 2016 and 2026, it traced the historical trajectory from the “dekasegi” boom of the 1980s through to permanent settlement in Japan. Through a comparative analysis of Brazil and Peru, the lecture offered a new portrait of migration, media, and globalization in the digital age.

We sincerely appreciate Prof. Retis’s visit and the opportunity to exchange ideas!
