About the Study
This article examines how Japanese youth who migrated to New York City and London negotiated their sense of national identity, both during the early phase of migration and again twenty years later. To achieve this, I employed the method of ethnographic returning, which enabled me to revisit and follow up with the same participants two decades after the initial fieldwork.
The research highlights how everyday practices and the use of digital media shape the long-term experience of migration and belonging. By focusing on the trajectories of cultural migrants, it sheds light on broader questions of identity, transnational life, and mediated connections.
